Hu Family Village and Zhu Family Village were originally allies. Out of loyalty, Hu Cheng led troops to assist Zhu Family Village. However, after learning that Song Jiang had no malicious intent and was attempting amnesty, Hu Cheng proactively rode out to persuade Song Jiang to withdraw his troops, but failed.

Subsequently, Hu Family Village was looted by Li Kui, and Elder Hu and Hu Sanniang were captured. Hu Cheng escaped by luck and fled to Dengzhou for refuge. Later, hearing that Song Jiang intended to seek amnesty and that Liangshan's power was growing, Hu Cheng ultimately decided to bring his family and surrender to Liangshan. However, after surrendering, Hu Cheng had very few scenes in the book, rarely showed combat performance, and mostly remained on the margins.
